The population was 4,512 at the 2010 census. Perry was originally named Welsh Settlement, but the name was shortly afterward changed to Three Mile Creek. It was renamed after Gustavus Adolphus Perry and his family, who were among the early settlers. Perry was first settled by Orrin Porter Rockwell in 1852. However he only laid claim to the land and did not build a residence. In 1853 William Plummer Tippets built a cabin at the location. In 1854 Gustavus Adolphus Perry was made branch president at the location. It had various branch presidents from then until 1877. In 1877 it was made a ward with Orrin Alonzo Perry as bishop. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,383 people, 747 households, and 643 families residing in the city. The population density was 310.9 people per square mile (120.0/km²). There were 789 housing units at an average density of 102.9 per square mile (39.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.68% White, 0.08% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.22% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races.
