About Grayson CountyGrayson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 120,877. Grayson County is included in the Sherman-Denison Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Dallas–Fort Worth Combined Statistical Area, and is also part of the Texoma region. It is named after Peter Wagener Grayson, an attorney general of the Republic of Texas. The seat of the county is Sherman. It was founded in 1846. On May 15, 1896, a tornado measuring F5 on the Fujita scale struck Sherman. The tornado had a damage path 400 yards (370 m) wide and 28 miles (45 km) long, killing 73 people and injuring 200. About 50 homes were destroyed, with 20 of them being completely obliterated. As of the census of 2000, there were 110,595 people, 42,849 households, and 30,208 families residing in the county. The population density was 118 people per square mile (46/km²). There were 48,315 housing units at an average density of 52 per square mile (20/km²).
